This building was a neighborhood grocery store that lost out to the big box super-center built on the edge of town. After being vacant for a couple of years, the building was given to the local school district. I worked together with the retired county engineer (who happens to be father-in-law to the then-assistant school district superintendent) on this project.
The building was gutted, brought up to current building code and outfitted with an array of offices and state-of-the-art meeting rooms to serve as an educational satellite facility as well as providing community services for under-privileged children across the county. Sadly, continuing budget cuts forced the user to relocate to a smaller facility that didn’t cost as much to operate, and this former grocery store again awaits another life.
