This is a scanned page of photos from pre-digital days of the unique residence of my late uncle Jesse Edsel Brown and his wife Alberta. Where little pigs were once born, a comfortable retirement home was crafted of recycled and salvaged materials purchased at liquidation sales and auctions. My uncle and aunt were avid gardeners, and specifically requested the south-facing green house added to the front where they started their spring planting before the snow melted from the ground outside. The back of the home was partially earth-sheltered, nestled into the earth on north and west sides for added insulation on this bluff perched along-side busy Interstate 70. The heating system was a hybrid arrangement of wood heat supplemented by a liquid propane fueled furnace. My Aunt Alberta recalls that the wood heat was always more “even,” as opposed to the forced-air gas system. After my uncle passed away in this house, his widow relocated to a double-wide unit set up a couple hundred feet away so the deteriorating barn house could be dismantled and find another life in other places. Life goes on!
