My architectural emphasis and primary mission is for the needs of the small church, although some projects have grown to as large as 50,000 square feet. This sanctuary was among several that I have positioned in very conventional rectangular pre-engineered building envelopes, but with center axis angled 45 degrees. The materials in most of the church projects are typical textured paint gypsum board walls and suspended acoustical tile ceilings. The versatility of these low-cost systems permits thinking “out-of-the-box” while staying inside a box of standard dimensions. In this application, the ceiling is a modified pyramid. I have found no significant difference in acoustical performance for church uses in any way we have shaped the ceiling system.
